First-rate company success must derive from a top executive who can think . . . who can provide the rest of his team with a desire to excel and a distinct impatience with mediocrity." In this his second book, the author of 'Tough-Minded Management' presents a formula for developing an entirely new business way of life. Using candid, no-nonsense language, he pinpoints the one element that can turn a mediocre company into a great one . . . the one element that can enlighten and energize ordinary firms so that they accomplish extraordinary things--Climate! Executives will find here not fanciful theories but tough-minded principles. -Principles that have been tested and proved in the marketplace and in the executive suite. -Principles that will help managers everywhere to understand the way of their jobs. -Principles that will help managers to develop and, in fact, settle for nothing less than employees who welcome responsibility and the challenge of contributing to company profits. A book by and for parents,Ó says Art Fettig, president of Growth Unlimited, Inc., Battle Creek, Michigan. He continues, I truly believe that if every American parent could and would read this book and begin to apply the powerful concepts and techniques it contains, we could resolve all of the problems families face.Ó The tough-minded approach is a people approach,Ó says Joe Batten, that expects the best from you and the people around you.Ó In this book we recognize that the future of our families, our world, will rise or fall in direct proportion to the presence, understanding, and practice of positive values.É It is our belief that the best way to think of child development is to see it as the growth of the child's value system.É Throughout this book, we show how to apply your positive values to some of the real problems and real opportunities parents face in the real world.Ó from the Preface

Successfully navigate the changing face of the CIO role Strategic Information Technology offers CIOs a handbook for engaging with the senior management conversations surrounding strategy. The CIO role is currently undergoing a massive transition from technology-focused expert to a more strategic mindset, and this book provides proven methods for taking your seat at the table. Lessons from high-performing CIOs and a wealth of leading-edge insight provide invaluable guidance for positioning technology as a strategic driver across the business, while a focus on building the necessary connections—for example, an alliance between IT and HR—provide a multimodal approach to navigating the transition. The evolution of the CIO’s role involves more than simply technical knowledge; the new CIO must be an influencer, an engager, and just as adept at the soft skills that become increasingly crucial as you climb the management ladder. It’s about changing mindsets, translating hard skills into strategic advantages, and demonstrating IT’s value to the strategic decision making process. This book provides best practices, illustrative examples, and up-to-date perspective for CIOs wanting to: Position IT as a critical driver of overall strategy Build on functional expertise with strategic insight Learn from the stories of successful tech-to-strategy transformations Engage C-Suite peers in shaping the strategic conversation Not long ago, the CIO occupied a unique place in the C-Suite. Executive by title, CIOs have nevertheless been seen as predominantly the “chief tech expert” with little input into strategy, as IT has historically been regarded as a tool rather than a source of competitive advantage. The truth is becoming increasingly apparent, with companies around the world turning to technology in order to gain a competitive edge, and CIOs are beginning to claim their place in strategy discussions. Strategic Information Technology offers much needed guidance for a successful transformation.

A management classic indeed, reissued and updated because it is simply the best concise guide to what happens when an organization installs and commits itself to a management-by-objectives system. Written by one of the best-selling management experts (J. D. Batten's 'Tough-Minded Management' has sold over 100,000 copies, and his various other titles have also reached very wide audiences) this book presents practical advice, techniques, guidelines, checklists, and action plans to help managers learn the art of motivation. Today's manager is a leader who recognizes that pushing and repressing employees are counterproductive to achieving an organization's goals. What is needed is a positive climate in which MBO can operate successfully. The personal involvement of each employee is essential to the all-out effort of the company, and it is this personal commitment to meet challenges that brings the organization's goals to life. Mr. Batten shows how MBO can be used to bring about a climate of productiveness and profitability. He lays out a seven-phase process that includes practical, results-oriented advice designed to make any MBO program a success.
