The intent of all technological advancements in the machining universe is to increase productivity and precision with less involvement of the endangered species known as the Machinist. Connectivity, data, and digitization are providing opportunities for significant improvements in modeling, programming, simulation, machine/people productivity, and real-time decision making. Advances in chip technology and processing speeds yield more sophisticated controls. Software enhancements create advanced CAM systems which interpret more complex models and produce higher precision programs. This book demonstrates how to integrate these technological advancements with Lean /Six Sigma, CNC Programming, Quality, and machining best practices to create an agile machining organization capable of winning against competition anywhere in the world. Technology by itself is not the answer. It is an enabler. This book is not about cutting speeds or vibration analysis. It’s about the business of machining and how to develop the infrastructure and people to provide not only profits and growth but long term sustainability. Whether machining is just part of your business or “all” of your business this book is for those at all levels of the company who must develop the machining strategy or execute the machining strategy. While most publications are written for executives the author has deliberately designed this publication for the entire organization. The role of everyone on the organizational chart or in the shop is discussed and reviewed. The premise of the book is that the demands of global competition on the modern machining organization are so great that success requires a foundation of Leadership, People, Equipment, Quality, IT, robust processes, and all employees executing to yield exceptional quality, delivery, and profits. I provide the architecture and blueprint for high performance.

The financial markets industry is at the same crossroads as the automotive industry in the late 1970s. Margins are collapsing and customization is rapidly increasing. The automotive industry turned to quality and its no coincidence that in the money management industry many of the spectacular failures have been due largely to problems in quality control. The financial industry in on the verge of a quality revolution. New and old firms alike are creating new investment vehicles and new strategies that are radically changing the nature of the industry. To compete, mutual funds, hedge fund industries, banks and proprietary trading firms are being forced to quicklyy research, test and implement trade selection and execution systems. And, just as in the early stages of factory automation, quality suffers and leads to defects. Many financial firms fall short of quality, lacking processes and methodologies for proper development and evaluation of trading and investment systems. Authors Kumiega and Van Vliet present a new step-by-step methodology for such development. Their methodology (called K|V) has been presented in numerous journal articles and at academic and industry conferences and is rapidly being accepted as the preferred business process for the institutional trading and hedge fund industries for development, presentation, and evaluation of trading and investment systems. The K|V model for trading system development combines new product development, project management and software development methodologies into one robust system. After four stages, the methodology requires repeating the entire waterfall for continuous improvement. The discussion quality and its applications to the front office is presented using lessons learned by the authors after using the methodology in the real world. As a result, it is flexible and modifiable to fit various projects in finance in different types of firms. Their methodology works equally well for short-term trading systems, longer-term portfolio management or mutual fund style investment strategies as well as more sophisticated ones employing derivative instruments in hedge funds. Additionally, readers will be able to quickly modify the standard K|V methodology to meet their unique needs and to quickly build other quantitatively drive applications for finance. At the beginning and the end of Quality Money Management the authors pose a key question: Are you willing to change and embrace quality for the 21st century or are willing to accept extinction? The real gem in this book is that the concepts give the reader a road map to avoid extinction. Presents a robust process engineering framework for developing and evaluating trading and investment systems Best practices along the step-by-step process will mitigate project risk, model risk, and ensure data quality Includes a quality model for backtesting and managing market risk of working systems

Cost Management in Plastics Processing: Strategies, Targets, Techniques, and Tools, Fourth Edition, makes readers think about current practices and how to go forward with effective cost management. This is a practical workbook that provides a structured approach to reducing costs in plastics processing for all the major plastics shaping processes (moulding, extrusion, forming) as well as elsewhere in the company (e.g., in factory services and non-manufacturing areas). Competition in all manufacturing sectors is increasing, and there is continuous pressure to drive costs down and to increase cost management. Good cost management improves profits and margins, improves management control and opens the door to becoming a world-class company. The approach throughout this book looks rigorously at where costs are incurred and proposes projects and targets for cost reduction. This book is designed to provide a well-structured map broken down into simple tasks and achievable goals. This book offers a structured approach to the techniques of cost management, from how costs are calculated by accountants, to the effective use of machines and labor, to the minimization of waste. It begins by looking at traditional methods of accounting and costing and whether these are helpful or accurate for project management. Practical examples of cost management in plastics processing are included, together with many useful flow charts and diagrams to illustrate the points under discussion. Enables plastics processors to institute an effective cost management system, going beyond simply trying to cut costs Provides a holistic perspective on cost management, shining a light on areas on costs which may not have previously been considered or accounted for, and proposing projects and targets for cost reduction Serves as a route map to help companies move toward improved margins and greater profitability

It’s time once again to make much of a simple concept; that two groups with different names, languages and cultures might put aside their old habits, pettiness and grudges, recognize the overwhelming alignment of their most critical self-interests, and join their complementary strengths to achieve unprecedented peace, harmony and productivity. That’s the concept behind total productive maintenance (TPM), where maintenance and production personnel cooperate to define, standardize, allocate and perform the tasks needed to maximize overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), which keeps equipment producing quality product at maximum efficiency and minimum lifecycle cost.

The ever expanding market need for information on how to apply project management principles and the PMBOK® contents to day-to-day business situations has been met by our case studies book by Harold Kerzner. That book was a spin-off from and ancillary to his best selling text but has gained a life of its own beyond adopters of that textbook. All indications are that the market is hungry for more cases while our own need to expand the content we control, both in-print and online woudl benefit from such an expansion of project management "case content". The authors propose to produce a book of cases that compliment Kerzner's book. A book that offers cases beyond the general project management areas and into PMI®'s growth areas of program management and organizational project management. The book will be structured to follow the PMBOK in coverage so that it can not only be used to supplement project management courses, but also for self sudy and training courses for the PMP® Exam.
